Let Wrexham and the gorgeous countryside of North Wales open up before you, on a hot air balloon ride from Erddig Hall and Gardens. This fine handsome property was built in 1684–1687 for Josiah Edisbury, the High Sheriff of Denbighshire. It will be the first thing to captivate your eye as your balloon begins to rise, as you take in its strong lines, formal gardens and wider parkland setting, that amounts to 1,200 acres. Just to the north, you will soon see Wrexham come into sight, with the view dominated by the 135 feet high tower of the St Giles Church in Wales. Considered one of the best examples of ecclesiastical designs in Wales, it is also considered one of the Seven Wonders of Wales – and there is no better vantage point from which to take in its scale, than from above.
To the east lies a patchwork of green fields that lead on past Bangor-on-Dee and draw the eye to England and on to the Cheshire Plains. If the whim of the wind carries you westward, you’ll be heading toward the stunning Dee Valley, with its rolling hills that tumble down into meandering rivers. A more southwest direction will see you floating in the direction of Llangollen. Be on the look out for Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, the largest aqueduct in Britain. The structure, along with the whole length of the Llangollen Canal is now a World Heritage Site. The town is also famed for its International Musical Eisteddfod held every July and is also home to the Llangollen Railway, a heritage line that you might be able to spot snaking in parallel with the River Dee. With expansive vistas, intricate views and a wealth of natural and historical splendour on offer, a hot air balloon ride over Erddig Hall and Wrexham will create memories that last a lifetime!
Why not consider spending a day at Erddig, the National Trust property from which your balloon departs. Here you can explore what life was life – upstairs and downstairs – during the early years of the 1900s. You can also relax in the impressive walled garden including some water features that intrigue the eye. Or head out into Erddig’s parkland and enjoy the woodlands and open spaces that surround the hall. Make sure you visit the Cup and Saucer waterfall – a cylindrical cascade that is one of the most original features designed by landscape gardener William Emes during his time at Erddig between 1768 and 1780.
If you find yourself in Wrexham itself, do visit St. Giles’ Church to admire the ornate design of this magnificent building. Slightly further lies Chirk Castle, another National Trust property that dates from the early 14th century. With its own unique history and tales of power and status, why not consider combining the two properties and making a full day, or two, of your ballooning adventure? Making your way into the Dee Valley, take a tip to Llangollen and marvel at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. You can walk over it or take a boat cruise – it’s quite the experience and is another great perspective to enjoy. Whilst there pay a visit to the Llangollen Railway, which you may have spied from the air. You can enjoy this other form of nostalgic transportation before sampling any one of the number of great places to eat and drink. There is so much variety in this part of country, you’ll be spoilt for choice in deciding what to do. Indeed, with so much natural beauty and historical importance in the area, your hot air balloon ride over Wrexham is just the beginning of an exceptional time in North Wales.
