BALLOON FLIGHT INFORMATION
Let the undeniable beauty of North Wales unfold before you as you rise up on your hot air balloon ride over Wrexham. Launching from the splendid setting of Erddig, a 1,200 acre landscaped marvel and grand Hall sit on a dramatic escarpment above the River Clywedog. As you gain height, so the expanse of Wrexham reveals itself to the north, whilst to the south and east, a patchwork of green hues dominate the scenery. To the west the landscape starts to undulate, gradually continuing upwards into striking hills and sharp peaks. If you drift northeast over Wrexham and on towards England, you will be able to see St Giles’ Church. This towering 16thcentury building’s steeple is 135 feet high and can be seen for miles around. St Giles is one of the finest examples of ecclesiastical architecture to be found in Wales and is considered one of the Seven Wonders of Wales. Beyond Wrexham be on the look out for Bolesworth Castle, an impressive family home known for its equestrian and music event.
If the wind determines south is the general way to go, then you might be able to spot the squat, bulky frame of Chirk Castle. This medieval fortress was completed in 1310 and sits at the confluence of the Dee and Ceiriog rivers on over 480 acres of manicured gardens and gorgeous parkland. If the breeze heads west, then the beauty of the Dee Valley will glide effortlessly below you as you take in its views rolling hills, meandering rivers and thick woodland. All the while, the drama of the North Wales hills beckon you forward and frame the scene perfectly. Ballooning over North Wales is an unforgettable experience, regardless of which direction you fly; and a hot air balloon ride from Wrexham is the perfect launch location to let the Welsh splendour come to you!
Make the most of your Wrexham ballooning adventure by spending some time in North Wales’ largest town. For an insight into the town’s eventful history and what has helped shape it, head to Regent Street where you’ll find the Wrexham Museum. Here displays and exhibits tell the story of Wrexham from prehistory to modern times. Staying in the town centre, make your way to Church Street, where you will of course find St Giles’ Church. Take in the scale of its steeple and study the intricacies of its grand design. Nearby you’ll find a range of cafes and pubs that boast some great views of the church.
Outside of Wrexham and the lovely countryside hosts any number of things to see and do. There is of course your launch at Erddig Hall, or you can venture slightly further afield and see other intriguing sights, such as the other National Trust castle you may have seen – Chirk Castle. Back in Chirk village itself you will find the Chirk Aqueduct. The aqueduct is 710 feet (220 metres) long and carries the Llangollen Canal 70 feet above the River Ceiriog via a series of 10 circular masonry arches. Nearby you’ll find places to eat and drink and also a small supermarket, where you can make up an impromptu picnic to enjoy by the riverside. For my aquatic awe, another of the canal’s aqueduct is closer to Wrexham: The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Considered to be the jewel of the canal’s World Heritage Site, you can walk the imposing aqueduct, or cruise across on a boat – whichever you opt for, this is the perfect partnership to your unforgettable hot air balloon ride over Wrexham and North Wales.
