BALLOON FLIGHT INFORMATION
Let a Foxton Locks hot air balloon ride open up the glorious views of Market Harborough and its surroundings. These important Grade II locks form part of the 200 year old Grand Union Canal, and are the longest such set of staircase locks in the country. Maybe on your balloon flight, you’ll get to see colourful narrow boats making their way up and down the 10 lock system.
As you climb higher, the historic market town of Market Harborough comes into view. Be on the lookout for the unusual Old Grammar School, which was built on wooden stilts to allow for a butter market to operate underneath it. Or maybe Rockingham Castle will appear on your radar. Built by William the Conqueror, this 900 year castle enjoys a panorama of five counties from its enviable position; which is almost as good as yours will be, drift on the will of the wind on your Foxton Locks and Market Harborough balloon ride!
The engineering marvel that is Foxton Locks date back to 1810, when Benjamin Bevan was given the job of designing a lock system that would allow boats to traverse the 75 foot rise up the steep escarpment. Four years later in 1814, his feat was accomplished and the locks opened. Discover more about the history of the locks at the Boiler House Museum. Or maybe you’ll watch the activity from your balloon flight and from the lock-side. If that appeals then you might very well be a ‘Gongoozler’ – that’s the name given to someone who enjoys watching the activity of canals in Britain!
A visit to Market Harborough is worth considering. Stroll to the Old Grammar School, which dates back to 1614, to admire its historic charm. For a broader insight into the town’s history, then head over to the Harborough Museum which is housed in the old Symington’s Corset factory. Both the town and the locks offer some great places to have a bite to eat, or to relax with a refreshing drink as you raise a glass in celebration of your hot air balloon ride over Foxton Locks and Market Harborough.
