Let a hot air balloon ride over Market Harborough open up expansive views of this gorgeous corner of South Leicestershire. With captivating castles, impressive feats of engineering and a quintessential patchwork of green field, quaint villages and the snaking Grand Union Canal, Market Harborough is a fabulous balloon ride location.
As you drift gently overhead, any number of interesting sights may float into view, including Foxton Locks, a 10-lock masterpiece which is the longest set of staircase locks on this 200 year canal, which takes boats around 45 minutes to travel the length. Or on the whim of the wind, Rockingham Castle might rise into view, or maybe Wistow Maze will tease the eyes. And then of course the visually charming market town of Market Harborough itself is a definite draw of the eye. Whichever way the breeze takes you, let this Leicestershire balloon flight create memories that last a lifetime.
Having seen Market Harborough from your balloon ride, it will be time to get up close and personal with this historic market town. Take a stroll to the iconic Old Grammar School that dates back to 1614. This unusual building saw the school having to be built on stilts to allow for room underneath for the butter market. You may have seen the broach spire of St Dionysius Church from the balloon, and here is an opportunity to see this Grade I listed building from the more normal perspective.
Once the Symington’s Corset Factory, the building now houses the Harborough Museum. Here you will find a variety of displays, exhibits and objects of local interest; including the Hallaton Treasure. This treasure haul includes the largest hoard of British Iron Age coins ever found, as well as Roman jewellery and parade helmet. And of course, some quality time watching the colourful boats traverse Foxton Locks is a must. Whilst at the locks you can also visit The Canal Museum, or enjoy a bite to eat at the Lock Keepers Cottage, or raise a toast to your balloon flight over Market Harborough at the Bridge 61 Pub!
