Take to the breeze on a hot air balloon ride over Grantham, and let the beauty of the Lincolnshire countryside expand into view. There are two terrific launch sites near the town itself – one just north of Grantham at the Belton Woods Hotel, and the other south, at the impressive Stoke Rochford Hall. As you rise up, both launch venues will afford you views out over the town with its towering spire of St Wulfrum’s Church (though the Belton Woods venue is closer to town).
Trace the snaking path of the River Witham as it cuts through a quintessential patchwork of rolling fields and pockets of thick green trees that make up the canvas for the numerous quaint villages that lie scattered across the region. Let the sense of freedom captivate you, as you drift gently over this picturesque part of England and watch daily life go about its business far below. This is ballooning Grantham style!
Grantham makes for an interesting launch site for your ballooning adventure, and is well worth a visit when you’re done. Take some time to see Grantham’s King School that has produced a number of well known graduates, including Margaret Thatcher and Sir Isaac Newton. You will have most likely seen St Wolfrum’s Church 282ft spire dominating the skyline of the town, and a stroll to see it on the ground is well worth the time. After that consider strolling to St Peter’s Hill, where you will find the Grantham Museum for a look into the history of the town.
Not too far from the town, you will find Belvoir Castle – home to the Duke of Rutland and an exceptional example of grand Regency architecture. Or head just north of the town to Belton House, a handsome mansion built for Sir John Brownlow in the 1680s, and now part of the National Trust. With so much to do, Grantham is the perfect spot for hot air ballooning over Lincolnshire!
