BALLOON FLIGHT INFORMATION
Let a Stamford hot air balloon ride from Stamford Meadows open up stunning Lincolnshire views and far distant horizons. Launching from beside the River Welland, the first thing you’ll see as you start to rise up is Stamford itself, regarded as the finest stone town in England. Historically a wool town, Stamford can trace its history back well over 1,000 years. If you look east of your launch site, you’ll be able to spot the imposing Burghley House with its bold, yet intricate architecture; it really is a sight to behold. Burghley dates back to 1555, though it would take 32 years to complete the house and is now considered to be England’s greatest Elizabethan house, which survives as one of the crowning glories of the Tudor age. The estate encompasses the expansive Burghley Deer Park with its astonishing arrow straight old carriageway, its present layout was designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. And whilst your attention is locked in that direction, see if you can also spot the Sculpture Garden with its eclectic collection of artworks.
Turn your gaze westward and you’ll see the Hanson Cement factory with its huge solar farm, and beyond that, the glistening horseshoe that is Rutland Water is simply mesmerising. Depending on the whim of the wind, you may find yourself drifting east and seeing the skyline of Peterborough open up; meanwhile due south of Stamford you can easily spot RAF Wittering. No matter where the breeze takes you, Lincolnshire is a quintessential patchwork of fields, rivers and charming villages. Stamford is a picture perfect ballooning location, so take to the skies and create memories that will simply last a lifetime.
Stamford is an attractive town that is well worth taking some time to enjoy. Maybe take a stroll down Barn Hill, a well preserved and picture-worthy cobbled street that has found fame in both television and movies. On St Mary’s Street you can locate the Stamford Arts Centre which is home to a theatre/cinema, an art gallery, a café and a tourist information centre. The assembly room, complete with chandeliers dates as far back as 1727, whereas the theatre was added some 51 years later and would become one of England’s earliest provincial theatres. For an insight into the town’s history and archaeology make your way to the Stamford Museum on Broad Street; here you will encounter a range of displays, galleries and exhibitions. In the town centre you will find Browne’s Hospital, funded by a local wealthy wool merchant, William Browne, and his wife, Margaret, they founded this almshouse in the late 15th Century. The hospital is open for visits during the summer months. Outside of the hospital is the Stamford War Memorial, dedicated to the fallen of World Wars I & II.
Enjoy the great outdoors with a stroll around your ballooning location at Stamford Meadows. Not only is it a lovely riverside setting, it is also a starting point of the Jurassic Way. You’ll also find a plaque dedicated to Boadicea, recording her pursuit of the Romans. For some majestic history, a visit to Burghley House is a must. As you will have seen from the air, this magnificent building exudes a sense of grandeur and mystique. Allow a full day if this is your preferred option, as between the house, gardens and deer park, there is plenty to see and do. Whilst there treat yourself to a delicious lunch, or just a welcome cup of tea or coffee in the rose garden. No matter where you chose to spend your ballooning adventure from Stanford, be sure to raise a toast to the flight of a lifetime.
