BALLOON FLIGHT INFORMATION
Let a hot air balloon ride from Llanvihangel Gobion open up magnificent views of the Vale of Usk and South Wales. Conveniently located halfway between Ragland and Abergavenny, Llanvihangel Gobion is a small village with big views! As your balloon starts to rise, so the scale of the scenery becomes apparent. To the east a patchwork quilt of green fields, seemingly stitched together with dark thread made of hedgerows, draws the eye towards the border with England. If you sail on the wind in that direction, look for the mighty Raglan Castle. Tales of power, loyalty and downfall seep in every corner of this bold, defiant building. To the west of Llanvihangel Gobion the looming splendour of the Brecon Beacons National Park command the horizon. These rugged mountains and hills, softened in further down by verdant fields and thick woodlands. They’re a captivating sight on your balloon ride.
Venture south on the breeze from Llanvihangel Gobion and you’ll float toward the picturesque viallge of Usk. See if you can spot its castle ruins by the river. To the west, over the treeline of Clifeigan Park, you might see Llandegfedd Lake, which forms part of the regional water supply system and doubles as a state of the art watersport centre. Beyond that point, the Vale of Usk continues south to Newport and the coast. South Wales is awash with history, culture and of course, striking natural beauty. So if you’re looking for a balloon ride near Cardiff or Newport, this fantastic launch site at Llanvihangel Gobion is the perfect one for you!
While Llanvihangel Gobion is a quiet village, it has plenty going on around it. If you travel east along the A40 you’ll soon get to the impessive Raglan Castle. If history and tales of high society are your thing, a visit here is just the ticket; (there’s also a lovely café with great views). About eight miles further along the road and you’ll arrive at Monmouth. The Monmouth Museum is quite the surprise as a large part is actually dedicated to Admiral Nelson! Also worth considering is the Rural Life Museum, which you will find south of Llanvihangel Gobion in the lovely town of Usk. Here you will be able to learn more about the life and work of the people of the Welsh Borders and have a go at milking ‘Bessie’ – a full size model cow! With its picturesque riverside setting, Usk is a great place to relax and enjoy a country lunch.
If you take the A40 west from Llanvihangel Gobion, you’ll find yourself in Abegavenny. Here you can visit the Abergavenny Museum and enjoy their exhibitions that recreate life from yesteryear. There’s a saddler’s workshop, a traditional grocers and a Victorian kitchen to name a few of the things you’ll discover here. St Mary’s Priory is famed for its collections of effigies, including the Jesse Effigy – a large one made form a single piece of oak that dates back to the days of Columbus. It’s the only one of its kind in the UK and quite possibly, the world. Head further west past Abergavenny and you’ll soon discover the drama of the Brecon Beacons, but this time from ground level. There’s plenty to see and do in the Brecons, but we’d suggest considering a visit to the Brecon Mountain Railway and an encounter with another form of nostalgic transportation – they’re steam engines. So whether you’re coming for your Llanvihangel Gobion balloon ride from South Wales, or further afield, this gorgeous ballooning location will ignite the senses and create memories that last a lifetime.
