BALLOON FLIGHT INFORMATION
Open the skies over Northampton on a balloon ride over the gorgeous Northamptonshire countryside. Launching from the pretty village of Hanging Houghton to the north of Northampton, you can expect some glorious views to immediately unfold before you. If you cast your gaze southward as you begin to rise, one of the first things you can spot is the open expanse of Brixworth Country Park, a nature and sports park that encompasses the long curved stretch of Pitsford Water. Due west of the launch site you can see Cottesbrooke Hall, a charming Queen Anne house dating back to 1702, which is surrounded by stunning formal and wild gardens.
If your balloon drifts north, be on the lookout for Kelmarsh Hall and Gardens, an elegant Palladian style country house that dates back to the 1730s. Its gardens are designated by English Heritage as being Grade II listed, making them a garden of national significance. If the breeze decides on taking you south, you’ll be heading from Northampton itself. In which case keep your eyes peeled for the Northampton & Lamport Railway – and if you’re lucky you’ll get to see another form of transport from s bygone era – a steam train – puffing its way along the track. If you are high over Northampton, look to the south of the city for the Deapre Golf Complex, as directly adjacent to its north boundary, you’ll see Delapré Abbey. The abbey can trace its ancestry back to a community of nuns who came to a quiet meadow, just outside the medieval walls of Northampton some 900 years ago, to establish the Abbey of St. Mary de le Pré. No matter what the whim of the wind, a balloon flight near Northampton will serve up a feast of sights and memories you take with you, long after you’ve landed.
Make a day of your ballooning experience over Northampton and spend some time in the town itself. For some background insights as to what has shaped the town, head to the Northampton Museum & Art Gallery on Guildhall Road. Here you can discover the town’s proud heritage of being the boot and shoe capital of the country, and indeed slip on the world’s largest collection of footwear for size! There are also sections covering the local archaeology, British and Oriental pottery, Italian paintings and a leathercraft gallery to name just a few.
If admiring some steam trains appeals, you have the choice of the Northampton & Lamport Railway just north of town, and the Northamptonshire Ironstone Railway Trust in the southwest of town. Whereas, heading about 12 miles south of town, will see you at the opposite end of the transportation spectrum – Silverstone Race Circuit – where you can either just spend some time at the visitor centre, or time your balloon ride with one of the many race meetings held here. Just north-west of Northampton lies Althorp. The ancestral family home of the Spencer family since 1508, this impressive house is surrounded by gardens and 550 acre park that form park of a larger 13,000 acre estate. It is amongst this serene beauty of the gardens that you will find the Round Oval lake, on whose banks sits the final resting place of Diana, Princess of Wales.
