BALLOON FLIGHT INFORMATION
Open us far reaching vistas on a hot air balloon ride over Oswestry and see the striking west Shropshire scenery collide with the drama of Wales. As your balloon rises up, keep a look out for Oswestry Hill Fort; this huge fort was built during the Iron Age and is one of the best-preserved hill forts in Britain. Studies have suggested that it was used and inhabited for almost 1,000 years. If you find yourself drifting lazily towards the Welsh border, try to spot the striking Chirk Aqueduck as it cuts across the valley from Shropshire to North Wales. Nearby stands the magnificent medieval fortress of Chirk Castle. Constructed by Roger Mortimer de Chirk in the latter part of the 13th century, it formed part of King Edward I’s chain of fortresses that surrounded North Wales.
If the breeze decides to carry you east, then the British Ironwork Centre and Shropshire Sculpture Park float into view. You might be able to spot the dramatic works of art including giant dragons, gorillas, spiders and elephants to name just a few! A westerly wind on the other hand will see sights such the lovely Bwlytai Wood nature reserve and possibly even Gryn Moelfre mountain (over the border) present themselves for your visual consumption from your unique vantage point, floating on the skies high over Oswestry and Shropshire.
There is lots to do in Oswestry, for both locals and visitors alike. A must see is the Old Oswestry Iron Age Fort. This mysterious settlement – one of Britain’s oldest – encompasses 3,000 years of intrigue and history. For slightly younger history, make your way to the Oswestry Town Museum which tells the story of the town through tales of local people as well as the area’s natural history. With a range of permanent displays and special exhibitions, it’s well worth a visit. For another take on local heritage make tracks to the Cambrian Railways Museum on Oswald Road. Here you can take a steam train ride and also learn about the passionate preservation efforts being undertaken by the staff and volunteers. Entry is free, but a donation to help this important cultural work is always appreciated.
You may have seen the British Ironwork Centre from your balloon flight, but either way it is worth a visit to admire the skilled craftsmanship of the sculptors and their incredible works of art. If you’d like to get a broad overview of what to see and do in Oswestry, make your way to the parish churchyard of St Oswald King & Martyr where you find the visitor centre. Set in the former Holbache House, it was originally the site of the Oswestry Grammar School which was founded in 1407. Besides the tourist information there are art exhibition areas and a café at which to catch your breath. In the town centre you will find a wide range of places to eat and drink – so you’re bound to find somewhere to raise a toast to your epic hot air balloon ride over Oswestry.
