BALLOON FLIGHT INFORMATION
A hot air balloon ride over Whitchurch in Shropshire gives the perfect vantage point to take in expansive views over the gorgeous countryside as it glides past below you. The busy market town of Whitchurch sits in North Shropshire, roughly in the middle of a triangle formed by Stoke-on-Trent, Wrexham and Shrewsbury, resulting in a captivating jigsaw of views to enjoy. Whitchurch dates back to 70AD and was established by the Romans. Even though remnants of those times are few and far between, there are numerous medieval, Georgian and Victorian architecture to admire from your unique vantage point in a balloon.
Launching from Whitchurch itself, known as ‘the home of the tower clocks’, due to the local company JB Joyce and Co, the town will soon start to expand into view. Pockets of green, such as Jubilee Pak and Greenfields Nature Reserve tease your eyes out to the rolling countryside that surrounds the town. With the breeze as your guide, you may find yourself drifting lazily over the Brown Moss – a local nature reserve that collectively offers a smattering of ponds and pools, mosses, and ancient peat bogs, created over 10,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. If the wind carries you westward, so Wales beckons you on. Straddling the border you can see (or fly over) Fenn’s Whixall & Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve. One of the biggest raised bogs in Britain, it is home to an astonishing amount of wildlife, as well as 18 species of bog moss, including the insect-eating sundew. Besides from the natural beauty you will enjoy on a balloon flight from Whitchurch, you will also enjoy taking in the sleepy villages, working canals and 360 degree horizons that ignite the senses and afford a sense of freedom you will simply never forget.
Make a day of your Whitchurch ballooning adventure by spending some time here. For an insight into the town and its history, head to the Whitchurch Heritage Centre on St Mary’s Street; here you admire artefacts that date as far back as the Roman times. The main exhibition hall introduces the work of the tower clock maker J.B. Boyce and their link to Whitchurch. Many of the exhibits are interactive and provide an interesting way to learn about the town and pass some enjoyable time.
If you’re up for a stroll, then a half hour walk alongside the Llangollen Canal will lead you to Whitchurch and Grindley Brook Locks. Here you can watch boats navigate the staircase locks and enjoy the tranquil setting. Maybe treat yourself to something from the Lockside Café, or follow the Sandstone Trail (a 55 mile walk from Whitchurch to Frodsham) a few hundred metres more and enjoy a hearty meal at the Horse and Jockey pub. No matter where or how you decide your day ballooning in Whitchurch, be sure to raise a toast to your flight over this gorgeous corner of Shropshire!
