BALLOON FLIGHT INFORMATION
Let the breeze be your guide on a Coventry hot air balloon ride over the glorious Warwickshire countryside. Your ballooning adventure will begin at Coombe Abbey Country Park – over 500 acres of glorious parkland, formal gardens and boasting the tranquil Coombe Pool, a long body of water that glistens delightfully as you rise up, this Capability Brown designed setting could not be more perfect. Originally a Cistercian Abbey dating from the 12th century and now a luxury hotel, this striking landmark will be one of the first things to demand your attention and spark your imagination, as your balloon climbs higher above its Coventry home.
Depending on the whim of the wind, you may find yourself drifting over Coventry itself, a city that boasts medieval monuments and contemporary landmarks. Be on the lookout for St Michael’s Cathedral, whose ruins still captivate the eye with its defiant spire and windows through which there is now only sky. Originally built between the 14th and 15th centuries, but significantly destroyed during the Second World War, the past sits proudly alongside the new Basil Spence designed cathedral that was built after the war. The two buildings are quite the contrast and encapsulate the old and new of the city perfectly. Away from Coventry itself you might find yourself floating in the vicinity of Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Garden, or Draycote Water reservoir and nature reserve, where you might spot sailing boats, easy going anglers or even a herd of 200 plus alpacas! No matter which way your ballooning journey carries you, a hot air balloon ride from Coventry will be one you’ll always remember.
Coventry offers so much to visitor and local alike. Why not keep the transportation theme of you day going with a visit to the Coventry Transport Museum – here you will find the world’s largest publicly owned collection of British vehicles, through which you will learn how the city changed the world through transport. Stroll through 14 galleries and engage with interactive exhibits, captivating displays and enjoy a drink at an award winning coffee house! Keeping in beat with the museum theme, in Coventry you will find one dedicated to the Coventry Police and another focused on musi;, one ticking along dedicated to watches, another hoping you’ll wing your way there to see their aircraft and one that pictures you in its art gallery.
If a self-paced stroll around the city appeals, then you’ll find numerous places of interest to visit. On Cook Street you’ll find one of the old City Gates. Originally dating from around 1385, it formed part of the city defences that Edward III gave the ‘goodmen’ of Coventry the right to build in 1329. In their day the city walls were two miles long, 12 feet high and eight feet thick!
On Priory Row in the Cathedral Quarter of the city, you’ll find Old Blue Coat School. Founded around 1714 as a charity school for girls, the present building is built over the ruins of the Cathedral and Priory of St Mary’s. It dates from the 1850’s and was sympathetically restored in 2000. And as you’re in that part of the city, make your way to Coventry Cathedral and see the contrasting places of worship up close and personal, to compliment your perspective of them on your hot air balloon flight high over Coventry!
