A hot air balloon ride over Stratford-upon-Avon? To be, or not to be: that is the question. But of course we all know they answer should most definitely be: to be! So take to the skies over Shakespeare country and let the splendid South Warwickshire countryside drift into view. As you rise up above Stratford-upon-Avon, see if you can glimpse the Bard’s home on Henley Street or his wife Anne Hathaway’s thatched cottage amongst the numerous black and white timbered houses. You’ll probably see the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and its smaller sibling, the Swan Theatre, in their wonderful riverside setting.
You can expect some further sights to captivate the horizon, such as Warwick to the north-east, whilst the beautiful Cotswolds start just ten miles to the south. The patchwork below you will contain a jigsaw of quaint villages, rolling pastures and historic country estates, such as Charlecote Park to the east, sitting on the banks where the River Dene meets the River Avon. Few ballooning locations can match the glorious collision between natural and human poetry quite like Stratford-upon-Avon, so make it your launch location for a balloon ride you’ll simply never forget.
If you’re visiting Stratford-upon-Avon then you have to visit William Shakespeare’s place of birth –it’s popular, but it’s still worth exploring and getting an insight into his childhood and early days. Costumed actors help bring an interactive flair to proceedings and it’s one for the bucket list ticked off. At number 26 High Street you’ll find Harvard House. This beautifully preserved Elizabethan home built by the wealthy Rogers family has been known for centuries as ‘the Ancient House’. It was built in 1696 by wealthy local Thomas Rogers, whose grandson was the main benefactor of Harvard University. Visit the house for an insight as to how the well-to-do townsfolk of Stratford-upon-Avon lived.
For an easy going way to get an oversight as to what’s where in the town, why not jump on an open top sightseeing bus – they take in all the main sights and sites, and you’re free to hop on and off at will. It’s a great option if you’re short on time but would like a decent overview of Stratford. Staying the night? Head out for an evening Ghost Walk and e regaled with stories about a jilted ride, a witch who lived in a slum, a 17th century haunted tearoom and the theatre ghost. Or perhaps you’d prefer to take in a live performance at one of the town’s theatres instead – let’s just hope it’s not the one with the ghost… No matter how you spend your day, the magical town of Stratford-upon-Avon is the perfect location for a hot air balloon ride over the best of South Warwickshire.
