BALLOON FLIGHT INFORMATION
Take a hot air balloon ride over Harrogate and let the glorious North Yorkshire landscape drift into view. With the breeze as your guide, any number of sights may come into view, such as Brimham Rocks, a scattering of dramatic moorland rocks that include logic defying balancing formations. Created by the force of a huge river, these rocks predate dinosaurs by more than 100 million years.
If the wind carries you south, you might pass over the historic spa town of Harrogate itself. If so, be on the lookout for the Royal Pump Room Museum. First built in 1842, it wasn’t unusual for 1500 glasses of water to be served each morning from Europe’s strongest sulphur well. The museum now tells the fashionable story of Harrogate and the daily spa routine, a place for health and happiness.Or maybe the charming market town of Knaresborough will drift into view. Perched high on the cliffs above the River Nidd, be captivated by its warren of medieval streets, ginnels (narrow passageways) and stone staircases that weave through the town. Not to mention striking railway viaduct that spans the Nidd Gorge. Whichever direction your Harrogate balloon flight takes you, expect epic Yorkshire views to create memories that last a lifetime.
Make a complete day of your Harrogate hot air ballooning adventure and explore some of the sights you may have seen close up and personal. First up is a slight detour to Knaresborough to visit Mother Shipton’s Cave and the Petrifying Well. Located on the banks of the River Nidd, Mother Shiptons Cave is the birthplace of Yorkshire’s famous prophetess.Next door you will find England’s oldest visitor attraction, the Petrifying Well. Combined these two attractions tell the story of Mother Shipton and the magical water that turns objects to stone. Afterwards amble the medieval streets of the market town and admire views down over the river.
Back in Harrogate make your way to the Royal Pump Room Museum that you may have seen from the air and discover the town’s connection to Russian royalty and what famous writers and politicians of the 19thand 20thcenturies made of their visit to Europe’s strongest sulphur well. Staying in those past centuries, head to Swan Road and the Mercer Art Gallery. Here you will find a fine art collection of some 2,000 works of art, mainly from the 1800s and 1900s. If you prefer just to meander the streets of Harrogate and enjoy its contemporary vibe, you will find a wide range of drinking and dining options to celebrate your unforgettable day ballooning over Harrogate.
