BALLOON FLIGHT INFORMATION
Let an Amersham hot air balloon ride open up the skies, scenery and sights of Buckinghamshire like you’ve never experienced before. Launching from the village of Great Missenden, one of the first things to draw the eye is nearly 900 year old Missenden Abbey. With its striking angular lines, corner turrets and air of status, it’s not hard to see why King Henry III accepted hospitality here on multiple occasions. The Abbey was founded in 1133 by a collective of Augustinian Cannons, but nowadays serves as an upscale conference centre and wedding venue. The village is also the home to the late author Roald Dahl, and a trip to the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre is well worth considering once your Amersham balloon flight has landed.
With the breeze as your guide, so views of the splendid rolling Chiltern Views expand before you. Below, a patchwork of green fields, hedgerows and quaint villages paint a picture perfect portrait of Buckinghamshire. A south-easterly direction will see you floating back towards Amersham itself. Southwest on the other hand, sees High Wycombe reveal itself. Before High Wycombe you can spot the intriguing Hughenden Manor – the former home of British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. During the Second World War, the manor served as a top secret map making base. With so many towns of interest, historic places and natural beauty, Buckinghamshire is a fantastic place to get aloft, so head to the skies on a hot air balloon ride over Amersham and create memories that will simply last a lifetime.
If you’re going to enjoy a hot air ballooning adventure as part of a visit to Amersham, then we’d say to at least make a day of it! There’s a lot to see and do here, such as the Amersham Museum. Here you can examine the displays, exhibits and hands-on activities that bring the story of Amersham over the years to life. There are particular snapshots through the ages that focus on the town in 1580, 1775, 1892, 1939 and 1964. Just a few doors up from the museum, you’ll find the Old Amersham Market Hall. Built in 1862 by Sir William Drake, the MP for Amersham at the time, it was considered at the time to be the most handsome in the county. For over 300 years, any meeting of any importance, was held here.
For a quirky collection, head over to Plantation Road where you’ll find yourself at The Amersham Fair Organ Museum. Here’ll you find a range of these musical instruments in a passionate museum run by volunteers. We’d recommend visiting their website before turning up, to make sure that they’re holding an open day when you intend to go. Beyond Amersham centre itself lies the green playground of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Boasting 1,250 miles of accessible footpaths and bridleways, getting out into the fresh air and enjoying the glorious views should be something to make your Amersham hot air balloon ride enough to tempt you for even longer.
