Bourne is a historic market town that is renowned for its culture, waterways, open spaces and wildlife and as your balloon rises up from your Grimsthorpe Castle launch location, so the town will appear to your south-east. With epic 360 degree views, a quintessential patchwork of green fields, dense woods and quaint villages opens up before you. If you head towards Bourne itself on your flight, you may drift over Manthorpe where you might be able to spot the largest living oak tree in England – with a circumference of 40 feet it is quite the specimen – and at over 1,000 years old, it’s probably seen a few changes to the area! And talking of something from the past – on Church Walk you can spot Bourne Abbey where Robert of Bourne, a teacher at the abbey, was the first person to ever write in English.
However the first that will captivate your attention will be the highly impressive gardens and parkland of Grimsthorpe itself. At almost 3,000 acres and roughly five miles across at its longest point, the park is home to three species of deer – including Red and Fallow – which now run free. Normally nervous and shy, they can sometimes be seen at a distance on the ground, but from your unique vantage point overhead, be sure to take advantage of your lofty viewing platform and look for these handsome animals. THINGS TO DO IN BOURNE
The quaint, historic market town of Bourne is a bit of a hidden gem and well worth taking some time to explore. If you head to Spalding Road in town, you will find the Delaine Bus Museum. The museum is dedicated to preserving a collection of heritage buses, photographs, documents and artefacts of Delaine Buses of Bourne – one of the oldest independent bus operators in England. If you find yourself on South Street on a weekend or bank holiday, you’ll be able to visit the Bourne Heritage Centre. Located in an old flour mill, the centre has a focus on local history and connections, such as BRM (British Racing Machines) and its strong links to British motorsports; railway memorabilia (Bourne having been a junction town before the railway closure in 1959; and Charles Worth – a fashion designer to French royalty in the 19th century. Admission is via donation, and like many small museums and heritage centres, your patronage will help keep these historical collections going into the future.
Bourne is home to 71 listed buildings, so it is well worth spending some time strolling the town to discover some real finds, such as the Red Hall also on South Street. Built in 1605, the hall as an interesting history, part of which has left it with its own ghost – a grey lady who flits from room to room on moonlit nights! If all the exercise makes you peckish, Bourne has plenty of places to eat and drink – from wine bars to fast food. Of course you may just wish to return to the launch site at Grimsthorpe Castle. Inside you will find the striking Vanbrugh Hall, impressive State Dining Room and the ornate State Drawing Room amongst others. On the outside you will find the 3,000 acres of parkland that contains trails that can take you walks of up to ten miles! No matter how you spend your ballooning day over Bourne, you will find plenty to see and do to make it quite the experience.

There are also always other sites nearby in Lincolnshire that can be used to get you aloft though if you need them. The Flight
