BALLOON FLIGHT INFORMATION
Let the Vale of Usk, Brecon Beacons and the South Wales countryside unfold before you on a hot air balloon ride over Abergavenny. Launching from just outside the market town, the incredible views start immediately. To the east, a green carpet of fields stretches towards the English border, whilst to the west, the imposing and dramatic Brecon Beacons start to dominate the horizon from the get-go. To the north Sugar Loaf presents an immediately mesmerising natural landmark. One of the first things to look for is the impressive Raglan Castle, whose striking silhouette defines the scale of the ‘greatest castle ever built by a Welshman’. If the wind carries you northeast, then you might pass directly over Hen Gwrt (The Old Court) Moated Site. This near perfectly square, moated site was probably a medieval manorial setting dating from the 13th century – and there is no better vantage point than from above, and none better still, than passing overhead at a leisurely pace.
Heading deeper into Wales will see you captivated by the rugged, windswept wilds of the Brecon Beacons. The national park is now a designated International Dark Sky Reserve (“land possessing an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and nocturnal environment”) and the true grandeur of the Brecons can only be appreciated from height – and a romantic sight requires a romantic viewing platform – luckily for you, they don’t get more romantic than a hot air balloon! Should the whim of the wind carry you to the southwest, then you’ll be heading in the direction of the national Capital, Cardiff. Closer to England and almost due south of the launch site is Newport from which, across the shimmering Bristol Channel, lies the north coast of Somerset. If this is your direction, you’ll be ballooning over the Vale of Usk. No matter which direction you fly, a hot air balloon ride over South Wales will never disappoint; so book your flight and create memories that last a lifetime!
If you’re visiting Abergavenny for your hot air ballooning experience, consider making a day of it (or weekend). There’s plenty to keep you occupied in the town itself, as well as even more to see and do in the surrounding countryside. For a snapshot in the local history of this historic market town, head to a hunting lodge within the castle ruins, where you’ll find Abergavenny Museum and Castle. With displays that include a traditional grocers, Victorian kitchen and saddler’s workshop, it’s a very visual insight into times gone by. For further immersion into the history of Abergavenny, pop into St. Mary’s Priory on Monk Street. Here you can see the world famous Jesse Effigy – the only wooden one the in the UK, and possibly the world. The effigy was carved from a single piece of oak and is one of a collection of effigies in the church that date from the 13th to 17th centuries.
If you feel like a stroll around town, it’s an easy place to navigate. Maybe head to Linda Vista Gardens to take in the serenity of this landscaped public park, that boasts a rockery, rose garden. There’s also multiple walks around Abergavenny to get you out into the local countryside. Alternatively head out of town and make your way to Raglan Castle, with a fascinating history, impressive towers and air of true ambition, Raglan Castle is definitely worth a visit. For something else from yesteryear, head to the Brecon Mountain Railway for another nostalgic trip behind a vintage steam locomotive. The scenery is stunning and a wonderful accompaniment to magic of the views from the air. Back in Abergavenny you’ll find a plethora of coffee shops, restaurants and well regarded pubs – so maybe find one to treat yourself to a meal in, and to raise a toast to your hot air balloon ride over Abergavenny!
