Take a hot air balloon ride over Bath and see this living museum from a whole new perspective. Launching from Royal Victoria Park in the city centre, the country’s only city listed as a World Heritage Site will soon come into view, as will its world-famous landmarks. With epic 360 degree views, your balloon basket’s vantage point expect to see the Roman Baths, which date back to circa 70AD and for which the city is renowned. But there’s be other impressive points of interest, such as The Royal Crescent, which is located right next to the launch site. And just a stone’s throw from that lies the unmistakable circular design of The Circus – a masterpiece of Georgian architecture built in the mid-18th century. Maybe you’ll drift over Great Pulteney Street, the widest and grandest thoroughfare in Bath is flanked by more fine Georgian buildings. Or look for the ornate, slender spire of St Michael’s Without on the corner of Broad Street and Walcot Street, close to the River Avon – it might be old, but religious worship has been carried out on the site before its claiming of the spot.
Keep your eyes on the river at that point for the chance to see Pulteney Bridge, one of only four bridges in the world that have shops across their full width on both sides. Let your eyes trace a path south of the bridge, past the East Gate and the Guildhall to the splendour of Bath Abbey, with its magnificent stained-glass windows and dominant tower, it’s a sight to behold. But the city isn’t the only thing that can captivate the eye. If you drift westward, expect the skyline of Bristol to reveal itself, and beyond that the shimmering of the Bristol Channel. If you head more southwest, then the Mendip Hills frame the views. Bath has many more museums and galleries, as is befitting of such an important part of England’s history.
With all of the things to see in Bath, you’d think a walking tour would take weeks! In fact, as a relatively compact city it’s incredibly easy to explore on foot. There are a range of guided tours that include traditional ones as well as quirky approaches, such as one dedicated to Frankenstein and another where you get to engage in an interactive escape room type mystery detective tour! But of course, no visit to Bath would be complete without a visit to it’s raison d’être – the Roman Baths – which you can locate at Abbey Church Yard. Discover more about the history of the baths on a guided or audio guide, as you take in the awe of being in a building dripping with millenniums of history. And at the end, sample some of the natural spa water which contains 43 minerals and been drunk for its curative properties for hundreds of years. If you’d like to relax in the city’s spa waters, you’ll need to head over to Thermae Bath Spa, where the water quality is appropriate for bathing. The main departure point is from Royal Victoria Park in Bath city centre. There are also always other sites nearby in Somerset that can be used to get you aloft though if you need them. Always make sure that you check your voucher details and again when you book in, for the latest launch site details, as they can change depending on weather and site suitability. The good news is, that your voucher is valid for all launch locations in the South West and you can leave your car at the launch site as this is where your ballooning experience will also finish.

The Flight

During your flight you are free to discuss how the balloon works with the pilot, who will also be pointing out the many points of interest that drift below you or rest gently on the horizon.

Landing

After an unforgettable hour ballooning your pilot will begin your descent towards a gentle landing. Once back on the ground, and should you wish, you can help in packing away the envelope (that’s the official name for the fabric canopy).
